Canon U.S.A., Inc., the company whose imaging solutions give people "Know How", is once again combining its expertise in camera design and advanced digital imaging technology to create the EOS D30 - the world's smallest and lightest digital SLR camera with interchangeable lenses. At a size of 5.9 x 4.2 x 3.0 inches and a weight of just 1.6 lb., the new, affordably-priced, digital camera retains the proven operability of the company' s best-selling EOS 35mm SLR system. The EOS D30 features a large-area CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) imaging sensor newly developed by Canon, with outstanding image quality sufficient for producing richly detailed color prints up to 11x14-inches. The new digital camera also accommodates all Canon EF lenses plus a wide range of EOS system accessories, giving photographers greater creative flexibility and providing current EOS System users an economical way to make the transition to digital imaging.
Features:
· Newly developed large CMOS* sensor with 3.25 million pixels:
The CCD* imaging elements used in previous digital cameras are costly and consume high levels of energy. Increasing the size of these imaging elements to include more pixels would require much larger power supplies as well as make them even more expensive. In developing the EOS D30, Canon has concentrated on using a CMOS sensor instead of a CCD. The CMOS technology has attracted attention for its lower power requirements, as well as its ability to integrate with image-processing circuits. However, several engineering obstacles remained - including problems with the precision of internal transistors that led to variable image precision - and few products were developed using this technology. However, Canon has now overcome these obstacles, and has succeeded in developing a large CMOS sensor.
* Area of imaging device corresponding to film size in a silver-halide camera.
· Compatible with the full family of EOS series accessories:
The EOS D30 can use each of the EOS series accessories without modification. For example, the E-TTL autoflash-compatible hot shoe can accept Canon EOS-dedicated external flash, including the 220EX, 380EX, or 550EX. The x-sync contact works with external flash, and the remote terminal connects to the new 3-pin remote controller.
· The first built-in E-TTL flash system in the EOS series:
The EOS D30 features the first built-in E-TTL flash system in the EOS series. E-TTL autoflash provides flash illumination and exposure control even under complex lighting conditions. This lets you take natural-looking pictures with the ideal flash setting for backlit scenes, sunsets, or interior shots. Features of this system include the flash exposure compensation function (adjustment plus/minus 2 stops in 1/2-stop or 1/3-stop* increments), as well as a flash exposure (FE) lock function that provides the proper lighting for the part of the subject you choose, and the 1st curtain/2nd curtain sync-switching function for capturing moving subjects.
· The built-in E-TTL flash is not compatible with high-speed sync (FP flash) operation.
· The flash guide number is 12/ 39 (at ISO 100, m/ ft), and the flash angle covers the field of an 18mm lens.
* Settable with Custom Function.
· Compatible with all Canon EF lenses for outstanding image quality:
The D30 can use all of the more than 40 lenses in the Canon EF lens series from full-open F aperture. EOS users can take advantage of their valuable asset. Note, however, that because the CMOS sensor has an area of 15.1 X 22.7 mm in comparison with the 24 X 36 mm image size of a 35mm film camera, the actual image recorded by the D30 is equivalent to the field of a lens having 1.6 times the indicated focal length of the lens. Therefore, the coverage with a 28mm lens is equivalent to 28mm X 1.6, or 44.8mm, approximately the same as that of a 35mm film camera with a 45mm lens.
· Five data recording formats:
The recording capacity of a digital camera is determined by the data compression ratio and image size. The EOS D30 provides four JPEG file formats, as well as the RAW format, in which data is stored in lossless compression. JPEG files are compatible with DPOF (Digital Print Order Format), so you can specify from the camera which files and print quantities you want, and write this information onto the CF card for easy printing.
· The two file sizes are 2160 X 1440 pixels (Large), and 1440 X 960 pixels (Small). The two compression ratios are Fine, which emphasizes image quality, and Normal, which emphasizes compact file size.
· The image size of a RAW format file is 2160 X 1440 pixels. Opening images in RAW format on a computer requires the dedicated driver software provided with the camera.
· Compact, durable body:
The EOS D30 is the world's smallest, lightest digital single-lens reflex camera, with a body size of 149.5 X 106.5 X 75.0 mm (5.9 X 4.2 X 3.0 in), and a weight of 750 g (26.5 oz). The chassis (or "skeleton of the camera") is made of special stainless steel alloy to ensure high rigidity, and the exterior is made of strong, light engineering plastic. This compact, durable camera body defies the common impression that digital SLR cameras have to be large and heavy.
· High-speed shooting of 8 continuous frames at 3 frames per second:
The EOS D30 has a newly designed image-processing engine and high-capacity buffer memory (32 Mbyte), enabling it to shoot up to 8 frames (using Large image size and Fine compression mode) in a continuous sequence at approx. 3 frames per second (shooting at 3 frames per second requires a shutter speed of 1/250 second or faster) when the Drive mode is set to Continuous. The EOS D30 can easily capture highly active photography such as Sports or Photo Journalism, in the same way with the conventional film SLR camera.
· Compact, high-capacity CF card:
The EOS D30 records images on a compact, easy-to-handle CF (CompactFlash) card. The camera is compatible with Type I or II PCMCIA-ATA standards, and so can use cards with capacities of up to 48 Mbyte using Canon brand CompactFlash card series, (approximately 66 images at Large/Normal quality), in addition to the CF card provided with the camera (capacity 16 Mbyte, holds approximately 22 images at Large/Normal quality).
· High-capacity battery system:
The EOS D30 uses a high-capacity Battery Pack BP-511 (rechargeable lithium-ion battery) to provide stable operation to take approximately 540 shots.* The Battery Grip BG-ED3 (sold separately) can accommodate two battery packs to further extend the camera's shooting capacity. It also provides a vertical shutter button, main dial, AE lock button, and focusing point selection button for easy operation when taking vertical shots. The Battery Pack BP-511 recharges in as little as 90 minutes using the Compact Power Adapter CA-PS400 provided with the camera. The DC Coupler DR-400 lets you operate the EOS D30 camera directly from a power supply through the Compact Power Adapter.
* When used in normal tempreture ( 20 degrees C/ 68 degrees F), with 50% flash photography.
· The shooting priority camera design:
The EOS D30 incorporates the "shooting priority" camera design, and eliminates the need to switch between Rec/Play/PC modes from a control panel. Even while viewing pictures or performing menu operations, you can return immediately to ready-to-shoot mode simply by pressing the shutter button down halfway. You won't need to miss a shooting opportunity.
